Xtreme Faith 4
“Faith of Abraham , Extreme Trust”

Hebrews 11:17-19 ~  8/23/2020
Dr. Scott T. Arnold ~ First Baptist Church of Los Angeles, CA

INTRODUCTION:  Faith is the “X” factor

  1. that stands the test of life and time.
  2. that trusts God even when things do not make sense.
  3. that trusts in God’s plan, purposes, and power.

I.
God refines us through the test of faith  (11:17a)
17  By faith Abraham, when God tested him,

II. Trust is deepened through obedience. (11:17b-18)

  1. Faith that God is bigger than our understanding (17b)
offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son,
  2. Faith relies on God’s promises  (even when things don’t make sense) (18)
18 even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”

III. God fulfills His promises  (11:19)

  1. God inspires our hope and enlarges our vision (19a)
19 Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead,
  2. God reveals His power and plans (19b)
and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.

Conclusion:

  • Extreme faith leads us to see God’s plan unfold.
  • By faith we grow to trust God even when life makes no sense.
  • By faith we discover how God is with us to provide hope.

17 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” 19 Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.  (Hebrews 11:17-19)

Questions for Discussion:

1.  Does God ever give us tests to see if we will obey Him?  Why?

2.  What tests have you been through? Which of them were trials and which were temptations or decisions?

3.  Why was it difficult for Abraham to receive this test of offering up Isaac?  Why would it have been difficult for any parent?  Are there any parallels today for how parents must trust in God?

4.  What is beautiful about Abraham’s reasoning?  When God provided a ram stuck in the bushes as a substitute for offering His Son Isaac, how did this moment reveal the character of God?

5.  How does this symbolic moment of “the only Son” being offered up by a “Father” relate to Jesus as the Son of God?

6.  When God puts us to the test there is always a reason. What are some reasons why God is allowing our planet to go through the COVID-19 pandemic?
