What Did Jesus Know?
“Watch Out”

Week 2:  Matthew 24:4-14  ~  7/7/2020 (pandemic reopening)

Sermon Outline:

I. Jesus knows that they must become wise about deception (v.4)
4  Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.”

II. Jesus warns about false messiahs (v.5)

  1. There will be many imposters (5a) 5  For many will come in my name,
  2. They will make false claims and give false hope (5b) claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’
  3. There will be many people who will be deceived (5c) and will deceive many.

III. Jesus warns that times of trouble will come (6-8)

  1. Wars and rumors of war (6a) 6  You will hear of wars and rumors of wars,
  2. Faith must be greater than fear (6b)  but see to it that you are not alarmed.
  3. Patience and perspective are needed to endure (6c)  Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.
  4. God’s Kingdom plan comes after much time and trial (7)
    1. Political turmoil and conflict (7a)  Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
    2. Natural disasters (7b) There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.
  5. Analogy of “birth pains” –  The coming of God’s Kingdom (8)  8   All these are the beginning of birth pains.
    1. The process is underway
    2. The process will take time
    3. The process will consummate in a good result

IV. Jesus warns that persecution will occur  (9-11)

  1. False accusations, arrests and executions (9a)  9  Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death,
  2. Hatred and rejection in every nation (9b) and you will be hated by all nations because of me
  3. Patience and perspective are needed to endure (6c)  Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.
  4. Apostacy and deception (11)  11   and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.

V. Jesus warns about the danger of losing faith, hope & love (12-13)

  1. Evil will infect many and bring about coldness (12) 12  Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,
  2. Believers will stay compassionate and committed to God (13) 13  but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

VI. Jesus reveals God’s mission and what needs to be fulfilled (14)

  1. The Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached worldwide (14a) 14  And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world
  2. The testimony of believers as a witness of Jesus Christ (14b) as a testimony to all nations,
  3. God’s plan involves a fulfillment of invitation (14c)  and then the end will come.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Why is it important to be forewarned? (24:4-6)
  2. The image of “birthing” is a positive metaphor of what God is up to.  How does this help you deal with the process of waiting and serving in Jesus’ name and for God’s Kingdom? (8)
  3. What did Jesus want His disciples and people today to know about the end times?
  4. How is it overwhelming to live in these times? (7-14)  How then is Jesus calling people to live with faith, hope and love?
