Xtreme Faith 8
“Faith of Joshua and a New Generation”

Hebrews 11:30-31 / Joshua 1:1-3; 5-8 ~  9/27/2020
Dr. Scott T. Arnold ~ First Baptist Church of Los Angeles, CA

INTRODUCTION:  Faith is the “X” factor:

  1. that teaches us to step forward in God’s promises.
  2. that gives us courage to believe and obey God.
  3. that is faithful to meditate and act upon God’s Word.

I.
Moses death, Joshua’s calling (Joshua 1:1-3)
1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: 2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them —to the Israelites. 3 I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.

II. God’s Protection and Promise. (Joshua 1:5)
5 No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.

III. God’s charge to Joshua & the people (Joshua 1:6-8)
6 Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. 7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

IV. The fall of the city of Jericho (Hebrews 11:30-31)
30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the army had marched around them for seven days.  31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.

Conclusion:

  • Extreme faith involves actions to step forward into God’s will.
  • Extreme faith grants us courage to trust and obey God.
  • Extreme faith is firm when it is faithful to God’s Word.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Moses did not enter the promised land, how can you relate to seeing the next generation take up the work of God?
  2. God told Joshua many times to have courage, why?
  3. When we step forward into God’s promises, what big challenges or big city problems (the walls of Jericho) do we face?
  4. Why did God emphasize that they should meditate on the law?  Why is this important to us today?
