Dear First Baptist Church Members:

The Pastoral Search Committee is pleased to recommend that the congregation call the Reverend Dr. Scott Arnold as Senior Minister.

The grandson of an American Baptist Minister from New England, Pastor Arnold graduated from Northern Baptist Seminary in Chicago with specialized training in the Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Education, has an undergraduate degree in urban planning from Michigan State University, and holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Luther Rice University in “Discipleship”.  He has served in churches in Chicago, Illinois; Providence, Rhode Island; Battle Creek, Flint and Quincy, Michigan, and Metropolitan Boston.

The author of five books on faith and theology, Pastor Arnold is a seasoned leader who has advanced initiatives on evangelism, discipleship and ministry innovation within ABC-USA.  A cancer survivor of 16 years, he makes listening, empathy, pastoral care, counseling and visitation a ministry priority.   He is also a creative person who plays the guitar, writes songs and enjoys making art.  He recently celebrated his 36th wedding anniversary with his wife, Marilyn Penacerrada Arnold, a registered nurse from Iloilo City, Philippines, who immigrated to the United States with her family in 1978.  They have three adult sons (Mark, Thom and John), two of whom live in California and one in Texas.  Pastor Arnold’s detailed personal biography can be accessed by CLICKING HERE.

On October 20, 2019, First Baptist Church will celebrate its 145th anniversary during Homecoming Sunday with the theme, “Celebrating Our Heritage, Embracing Our Future.”  We have invited Pastor Arnold to serve as our guest preacher who will deliver a sermon titled, “Unity and Hope In Christ” based on Philippians 2:1-13 and Isaiah 62:1-5.  You are invited to attend the worship service at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary to welcome Pastor Arnold.  Following the close of the worship service, the congregation will be asked to vote on the Committee’s recommendation that Pastor Arnold be called to serve as Senior Minister.

You will also be given an opportunity to meet-and-greet Pastor Arnold and Marilyn during the days prior to October 20thCLICK HERE for a schedule of activities during which you are invited to personally meet them as your schedule permits.  A coffee fellowship with Pastor Arnold is also scheduled on Sunday, October 20th, at 9:00 a.m. followed by a combined Sunday School session which we have asked him to teach.  Pastor Arnold will lead a Bible Study on the Body of Christ and Spiritual Gifts based on a book he co-wrote, “SHINE:  A Celebration of Spiritual Gifts”.

Our pastoral search process has been unexpectedly protracted but after all, First Baptist Church has been making God’s love known in Los Angeles for 145 years.  Perhaps First Baptist Church is entering a new season of spiritual revitalization while finding fresh expressions in an ever-changing world.  Won’t you please join us on October 20th so together, we can not only celebrate our Homecoming, but also move forward as a community of faith, embracing our future, at the corner of Eighth Street and Westmoreland Avenue?

Please do not hesitate to contact me at (213) 590-9992 or if you have questions or need more information.
