OUR CHURCH
MISSION STATEMENT

The purpose of the First Baptist Church of Los Angeles is to make God’s love, as it is known in Jesus Christ, present in word and deed.

  • In worship and study we dedicate ourselves to the proclamation of the risen Christ, inviting all to respond in faith and love.
  • In acts of service and missionary outreach we live out God’s love and demonstrate God’s care for all of God’s creation.
  • In fellowship and celebration we recognize that God is building a family of faith in and through us.

In proclamation, in service, in fellowship we are committed to being international interracial, and ecumenical, believing these to be essential expressions of our Christian faith.

CHURCH HISTORY

First Baptist Church of Los Angeles is a Historical Landmark that was founded by eleven followers of Jesus who gathered for worship at the first service of the First Baptist Church of Los Angeles under the leadership of the church’s first pastor, Dr. William Hobbs on Sept. 6, 1874. As it’s membership grew, First Baptist Church moved to its first official home at the corner of Sixth and Fort Streets in 1884. With just 100 members, the new building was funded by donations from well-known Angelonian families like the Van Nuys’ and Lankershims.

Because of continued growth, FBCLA moved to its current location in 1927; an immense Spanish gothic building with more than 130 rooms. The church’s new sanctuary seats 1,950 and unlike most Southern California Baptist churches, FBC’s ceiling was patterned after the chapel of the Ducal Palace in Mantova, Italy. It is one of the most beautiful churches of Los Angeles.

“The best place ever to worship God!
‘For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand [anywhere else]; I would rather be a doorkeeper and stand at the threshold in the house of my God than to dwell [at ease] in the tents of wickedness.’ – Psalm 84:10 AMP”

CARLOS

“I have attended services twice and I’m so happy to have found this church. I have been welcomed with open arms and I’m excited to grow spiritually here.”

AMY

“The people were friendly and personable and the venue is beautiful. I think the service was to long mostly because of the Filipino history month presentation. I really enjoyed the sermon it was wonderful. I loved the passion the pastor show for the word of God.”
